Windows XP end-of-life options

On April 8, 2014, Windows XP reached end-of-life support. There will be no more support, automatic updates, security updates, or patches for exploits. Additionally, Microsoft Security Essentials has already been removed as an available download, and Microsoft has warned that anyone using the product will receive updates for a very limited time.  Individuals and companies with Windows XP installed are thus exposed to elevated risks and Cybersecurity dangers.

Microsoft recommends that you purchase a new PC because very few older PC's are able to run Windows 8.1 which is the newest version of Windows. Microsoft and other computer companies that sell PC's like this idea because this generates more income for them.  Microsoft makes money from Windows licensing fees from each new computer and other computer companies make money on the computers they sell you in addition to the services they provide such as transfer of data, new software to protect you, and any upgrades they perform. When your computer breaks down again in the future -- as is inevitable with Windows operating systems, those companies hope you will return for them to fix that as well.

However, we want you to know there are other more cost effective long term solutions. For $99 (less than the price of a newer version of Windows alone) we can offer you a solution to get your computer working again in a secure and productive manner.  There are no licensing costs, upgrade costs, your license will not expire, never has to be activated, and is free for you to customize as you choose. Linux has been rated the "clear choice for security" by United Kingdom's Communications-Electronics Security Group. New versions of Linux are user friendly, support multimedia, and are more secure to use than any version of Windows -- meaning you will not be affected by viruses, trojans, malware, or rootkits.

Since Microsoft is forcing you to adapt to a whole new operating system anyway, you have nothing to lose by giving Linux a try. Governments, major corporations, education centers, universities, research centers, and financial institutions (including the City of Largo, Pinellas County, the U.S. White House, Department of Defense, Federal Aviation Administration Federal Courts, Navy, Postal Service, AIG, Amazon, Facebook, Cisco, Novell, IBM, Sony, Toyota, Wal-Mart, Virgin America, Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, Bristol-Meyers Squibb, Deutsche Bank, Bank of New York) are among those who have adopted Linux and are harnessing the cost savings of free open source software.

Free software which has been packaged with Linux or is available to download for years includes just about anything you may use your computer to do; including, but not limited to:

  • Secure internet browsers (unlike Internet Explorer)
  • Anti-virus (although you will not need it unless you're scanning a Windows machine)
  • Backup software
  • Email software similar to Outlook
  • Firewall
  • Productivity software like Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Graphics editors and print layout
  • Movie editing software
  • Small business accounting software
  • Pdf creation and editing
  • Bittorrent clients that function
  • Bitcoin mining software
  • Instant messing clients that support multiple services (AOL, Google, Yahoo, Jabber, MSN, and more)
  • Remote access (encrypted)
  • Terminal software
  • Developer software
  • VPN
  • Encryption
  • Virtual Emmulation

Ubuntu is by far the most user friendly flavor of Linux so I've put together a Youtube video you can find here, which you will find helpful in making the switch.

If you would like to try to install Ubuntu on your own, you can also purchase a preloaded bootable USB flash drive from us here.
